Tasmanian Devil

How much habitat and how many animals do we need to lose for green energy?

Right now there is a battle in Tasmania, Australia to erect a new $1.6 billion windfarm. According to the article on news.com.au there are endangered Tasmanian Devils on Robbins Island off the coast of Tasmania where they want to build the windfarm. The main issue is the island is not linked to mainland Tasmania and there are Tasmanian Devils on the island that are free of the devil facial tumour disease which, has wiped out around 80 per cent of the mainland Tasmanian Devils. The real kicker is that they want to build a bridge/causeway to mainland Tasmania therefore allowing the devil facial tumour disease onto the island.

Now the project will (as per most projects in Australia) bounce between the different levels of government. According to the news.com.au article it’s with the Federal Government waiting on a decision. Projects like this that have such an impact on habitat and endangered animals should not go ahead. These projects should use a location that was used to mine fossil fuels as the damage has already been done.

If we keep clearing land instead of re-using what we have already cleared this just makes our global problem even more dire.

If it doesn’t work go to news.com.au and search “windfarm” then it should come up.
